Before You Register

Please read through our eligibility requirements in full before registering to ensure that your team is eligible to compete in HopStart. Following the eligibility requirements listed below, please take time to read through our registration guidelines before registering.

HopStart Eligibility Requirements

Please read the eligibility requirements below in full before registering for the competition.

For all categories, teams may include both Johns Hopkins University students (undergraduate, graduate and/or post-docs) and non-JHU affiliates; however, at least one team member must meet BOTH of the following requirements:

  • Be a current part-time, full-time, or Postdoctoral student of any of the nine divisions of Johns Hopkins University at any point during the current academic year.
  • Be a member of the venture’s startup management team.

All categories are open to entries from any division of Johns Hopkins and members of teams can span more than one division of the university.

Teams may be any size, but must include at least one student that meets the requirements outlined above. Only eight members of a team may register for the event, though additional team members can assist with preparing the business plan in Stage 1 of the competition. Please email us at hopstart@jhu.edu if you wish to provide individuals with access to your LivePlan template who do not plan to attend competition day.

The competition is for student-created and student-managed ventures, including new ventures launched through the licensing of university technology. Students are expected to:

  • Be the driving force behind the new venture,
  • Have played the primary role in developing the business plan,
  • Have key management roles in the venture, and
  • Own significant equity in the venture.

Non-students may be members of the venture’s management team and may participate in planning the venture. Non-student team members are welcome to participate in all rounds of HopStart. Faculty advisers or other team mentors are encouraged to attend, but cannot participate in pitching their team’s venture.

Teams may not submit multiple startups in more than one category, as presentations in each category run simultaneously.

All ventures may be seeking outside equity capital (typically early stage venture investment or early stage angel investment), but the total amount of investments may not exceed $25,000 as of August 2025. See the section below titled Venture Status for more information.

The competition is for new, independent ventures in the seed, start-up, or early growth stages. Generally excluded are the following: buy-outs, expansions of existing companies, real estate syndications, tax shelters, franchises, licensing agreements for distribution in a different geographical area, and spin-outs from existing corporations. Licensing technologies from universities or research labs are encouraged, assuming they have not been commercialized previously.

Teams that have placed 1st, 2nd, or 3rd in past HopStart Competitions are not eligible to compete again with the same concept.

Ventures must be pre-profit and have less than $25,000 in outside investment funding as of August 2025. Ventures that have raised equity capital from sources other than the members of the student team or their friends and families before the current academic year, i.e., before August 2025 that exceeds $25,000, are excluded. However, both student and other team members may have worked on an idea or new technology in previous academic years or in the case of the student team members even prior to entering Johns Hopkins University, provided that their venture had no revenues and raised no outside equity capital prior to the current academic year.

HopStart final presentations will take place on Friday, April 24, 2026 at the Inn at the Colonnade. Competitors must attend in person to pitch their ventures to judges. Winners will be announced at the awards ceremony directly following the final presentation round.

All team members on teams that place in the competition are required to submit a Vendor Setup Form. If the venture has been incorporated and has received an EIN, one form may be filled out if the team wishes for the prize monies to be directed to the business rather than the individual team members. Members who are not Johns Hopkins University students must also submit an individual Form W-9 or W-8 EC. No prizes will be awarded without the necessary forms on file with the Center for Leadership Education.

Teams have full control over the distribution of prize money. Prizes are awarded through Hopkins’ vendor payment process and prize recipients receive 1099s in January for tax purposes. This is important to keep in mind when deciding on how your team’s prize money will be distributed.

Registration Guidelines

  1. A maximum of 8 competitors per team may register for the competition. Please see guidance on who should register below:
    • Who should register: all team members who wish to attend the live event (Stage 2) to present on behalf of their team on Friday, April 24, 2026 (maximum of 8 per team).
    • Who should not register: team members who only wish to assist their team with Stage 1 of the competition. These team members should email hopstart@jhu.edu to request access to their team’s LivePlan template instead.
  2. Only one member of each team should register their team for competition. Please confer with your team before registering and include ALL team members’ names and email addresses on your registration form to ensure that they receive all competition communications and are provided access to LivePlan for Stage 1 of the competition.
  3. HopStart competitors must choose to enter their startup in one of four categories: General Ventures, Healthcare Ventures, Medical Technology Ventures or Sustainability Ventures. See the descriptions of each category below to determine the best fit for your venture.
    • General Ventures: The General Ventures category encompasses commercial enterprises in the form of products, services, or technology outside of the scope of the Medical Technology and Life Sciences and Sustainability categories. These ventures identify an opportunity in the market and develop an innovative approach to fill this need.
    • Healthcare Ventures: The Healthcare Ventures category includes digital health solutions, software applications, telemedicine platforms, and healthcare management systems, which focus on optimizing operational processes and improving patient experiences rather than providing direct medical intervention.
    • Medical Technology Ventures: The Medical Technology and Life Sciences Ventures category includes medical devices, digital health solutions, and pharmaceuticals & biologics. These solutions target an unmet need in healthcare and life sciences. These ventures must be feasible and have a scientifically-sound basis.
    • Sustainability Ventures: The Sustainability Ventures category includes any venture whose objective is to reduce adverse impacts on the environment and on society. These ventures might reduce manufacturing waste or emissions; use renewable energy; support equity and human rights; or engage with and benefit local communities.
    • If you have any questions about which category your team should enter, please email us at hopstart@jhu.edu.
  4.  Teams will receive a confirmation email with instructions for completing Stage 1 of the competition within 2 business days of registering. This is not an automated process, so please give our team time to review your submission. These instructions are also available at the link above.
  5. Within 2 business days, registrants will also receive an email invitation from LivePlan, providing access to their team’s business plan template. Like the confirmation email, this is a manual process, so please allow some time between registration and receipt of a LivePlan invitation.
  6. Registrants must accept their LivePlan invitation within seven days, or it will expire. If a link expires, please email hopstart@jhu.edu to request a new invitation.
  7. Review the competition instructions to learn more about completing each stage of the competition and track important deadlines with the complete HopStart timeline.
