Sharon GerechtHai-Quan MaoThe Institute for Nanobiotechnology (INBT) is pleased to announce that Sharon Gerecht and Hai-Quan Mao have been appointed as associate directors, effective January 1, 2016.

Both Gerecht and Mao are engaged in collaborative projects with researchers in the School of Medicine, the Bloomberg School of Public Health, the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, and the Applied Physics Laboratory.

Gerecht is the Kent Croft Investment Management Faculty Scholar and associate professor of chemical and biomolecular engineering and Mao is professor of materials science and engineering. Mao has been active in the INBT since its inception in 2006, and Gerecht since arriving at Hopkins in 2007.

INBT was launched with support from Senator Barbara Mikulski to promote multidisciplinary research at the interface of nanotechnology and medicine. The institute, with more than 250 affiliated faculty members from the Whiting School of Engineering, the Krieger School of Arts and Science, the School of Medicine, and the Bloomberg School of Public Health, is home to several center grants and numerous education, training, and outreach programs. Under the guidance of Peter Searson, INBT director and the Joseph R. and Lynn C. Reynolds Professor of Engineering, and Denis Wirtz, Associate Director of the INBT, Vice Provost for Research, and Theophilus H. Smoot Professor of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, INBT has been instrumental in advancing science and engineering in critically important areas of research.

“Having Sharon and Hai-Quan join Peter and Denis in leading the INBT will aid in the institute’s continued growth and I have no doubt that in their new roles, they will help advance the INBT’s mission and its stellar reputation,” said Ed Schlesinger, Benjamin T. Rome Dean of the Whiting School of Engineering.
