Siebel Scholarship Program

At Hopkins Engineering, every year, five single-year Siebel Scholarships are awarded to students in bioengineering fields who are at the top of their class, based on their academic results (including research), who have demonstrated excellence in terms of their leadership in the school community and in their experiences prior to their graduate program at JHU, and who have completed at least one year at the school and are reasonably expected to have only one year remaining. Candidates are identified by their home departments in the early summer; applicants need not nominate themselves. Awards are announced in the late summer.

Nomination and Selection Process

1. Interested students should speak with their adviser/faculty/department academic staff about the internal nomination process.
2. Our departments nominate candidates through an internal selection process (internal deadlines vary) and submit final nominations to the dean’s office by the end of June.
3. The JHU/Siebel Scholars Selection Committee identifies finalists in early July.
4. The Siebel Scholars Foundation reviews nominees and makes the final decision in August/September.
5. Students are notified in September.

Criteria

Nominees must meet all of the following criteria at the time of selection:

• Currently enrolled in either a master’s or PhD program.
• Conduct research is in the Bioengineering field.
• Rank within the top 10 percent of their class, based on academic results (mostly As, no Cs, etc.).
• Demonstrate excellence in terms of their leadership qualities in their academic and non-academic pursuits and in their experiences prior to entering their graduate program.
• Have a track record of distinguished research.
• Have completed at least one year at Johns Hopkins University and are reasonably expected to have only one year remaining in their master’s or PhD program (one year remaining two full semesters left in a degree program but no more than 3 semesters).

Nomination Requirements

• Resume (CV)
  • Including publications with full citations (i.e., including page numbers)
  • Clearly states the month and year of expected degree completion
• Autobiographical sketch (150 words, maximum)
  • Including academic and non-academic leadership skills/experience
• JHU Transcript
• Up to two letters of recommendation (one must be written by their advisor, and we strongly recommend two)
• Digital photograph (professional/business casual clothes/setting)
