
The Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering is launching a new, multidisciplinary engineering design course in the fall of 2019. This 1-semester course will bring together students from multiple engineering disciplines to address real world challenges. The class of 15-20 students will be placed on 4 or 5 teams, and each team will be matched with a project partner from industry, medicine, or the social sector. Students will learn to collaborate between their different work styles and cultures, understand the essential need behind the problem, prototype solutions, test, and present a final solution to their project partner. Each team will be matched with technical advisors relevant to their project.
The course will meet from 1:30-2:45pm on Monday and Wednesday in Brody Learning Commons 5015/5017. Students from the departments of mechanical engineering, biomedical engineering, chemical and biomolecular engineering, environmental health and engineering, materials science and engineering, civil engineering, computer science, and electrical and computer engineering are all invited to take the course.
TA DESCRIPTION
The role of the TA will be 2-fold: managing logistics and team coaching. If the TA is interested in curriculum development (designing course activities or mini-lectures), other responsibilities can be shifted during those times to accommodate that work.
LOGISTICS
- Primary communicator with project partners and technical advisors in regards to course updates and logistics
- Printing and preparing materials for class
- Grading deliverables with the instructor and compiling feedback for each team
TEAM COACHING
- Meeting teams weekly or biweekly
- Offering design process and team dynamics mentorship
- Offering technical mentorship on projects within the TA’s engineering expertise
TA QUALIFICATIONS
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- Engineering senior or graduate student who has previously taken and/or TA-ed a project-based course
- Exposure to design thinking (human-centered design) processes and mindsets
- Strong communication skills, both written and interpersonal
- Strong organizational skills
- Solid understanding of basic engineering principles and technical depth in their discipline or area of research
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Experience developing a product or service outside an academic environment
- Mentorship experience
- Experience in navigating team dynamics
- The ability to bring positivity to the learning environment

COMPENSATION & SCHEDULE
- Paid hourly at $15-$16/hour, based on previous experience
- 10 hrs/week expected commitment
- August 26 – December 20, 2019
- Expected to attend all classes (M/W 1:30-2:45pm)
- Logistical responsibilities and meetings with teams can be flexibly scheduled to work with other commitments
