We are pleased to congratulate undergraduate student Shiyu Xia on his 3rd place win in the environmental topical area at the 2014 AIChE Undergraduate Student Poster Competition. He began conducting the project, “Magnetophoresis of Iron Oxide Nanoparticles for Oil Removal from Emulsions,” under the supervision of Dr. Chao Wang after winning the department’s Elnora Streb Muly Award in Summer 2014.

The objective of his winning project was to find an efficient way to clean up oil-in-water emulsions after oil spills. Shiyu has developed a facile and energy-efficient method to recycle oil from oil-in-water emulsions utilizing iron oxide nanoparticles.
