Rama Chellappa, Bloomberg Distinguished Professor in electrical and computer engineering and biomedical engineering, who is affiliated with CIS, CLSP, IAA, and MINDS, and interim co-director of the forthcoming data science institute, has been selected to receive the Distinguished Researcher Award from IEEE Computer Society’s Pattern Analysis and Machine Intelligence Technical Committee.

This award is presented to candidates whose research has significantly contributed to the progress of computer vision. Candidates are nominated based on major research contributions and their ability to influence additional research in this area.

Rama’s work in computer vision, pattern recognition, and machine learning have had a profound impact on areas including biometrics, smart cars, forensics, and 2D and 3D modeling of faces, objects, and terrain. His work in motion capturing and imaging shows promise for future use in health care and medicine.
