Hynek Hermansky, the Julian S. Smith Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and director of the Center for Language and Speech Processing, has been named the recipient of the 2020 IEEE James L. Flanagan Speech and Audio Processing Award.

Established in 2002 and presented by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, this award is given annually to an individual or a team in recognition of outstanding contributions to the advancement of speech and/or audio signal processing. Hermansky was recognized for his pioneering “contributions to speech processing and feature extraction for robust speech recognition.”

For more than three decades, Hermansky has conducted groundbreaking research in human hearing and technology. His work has far-reaching implications for machine-based artificial intelligence. He directs one of the largest and most acclaimed speech and language-oriented academic groups in the world.
