Fadil Santosa

Fadil Santosa, department head and professor of applied mathematics and statistics, has been named the first Yu Wu and Chaomei Chen Department Head of Applied Mathematics and Statistics.

This endowed department headship was established in 2019 by Yu Wu and Chaomei Chen to support the Department of Applied Mathematics and Statistics. Wu received his master’s and doctoral degrees in history from the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences in 1989 and 1996 respectively; Chen received her master’s degree in mathematical sciences from the Whiting School of Engineering in 1988 and serves as a Whiting School advisory council member and university trustee.

Santosa joined Johns Hopkins University in 2020 from the University of Minnesota School of Mathematics, where he was a professor and directed the Institute for Mathematics and Its Applications. He is widely known for his efforts to bridge the gap between mathematical research in academia and industry. His current research focus is on optimal experiment design for inverse problems and electromagnetics on graphene. He holds two patents and is a fellow of the Society of Industrial and Applied Mathematics and of the American Mathematical Society.
