Somnath Ghosh, the Michael G. Callas Chair and Professor of Civil Engineering, has been elected to the Board of Governors of the Engineering Mechanics Institute of ASCE for a three-year term starting October 1, 2016.

The EMI’s Board of Governors defines the institute’s strategic directions, oversee its operations, and promote its growth and development in order to meet the needs of the engineering mechanics community. Ghosh’s election to the Board of Governors follow years as an active member of the organization, where he served as chair of the ASCE/EMI Computational Mechanics Technical committee in from 2012-2014 and as vice chair from 2011- 2012 and from 2014 -2015. He also has served on the EMI’s Awards Committee and participates regularly in their conferences and symposia.

At the Whiting School, Ghosh’s research focuses on multi-scale structure-materials analysis and simulations, multi-physics modeling and simulation of multi-functional materials, materials characterization, process modeling, and emerging fields such as integrated computational materials engineering. He directs the Computational Mechanics Research Laboratory, the Center for Integrated Structure-Materials Modeling and Simulations, and the Center of Excellence on Integrated Materials Modeling. He also is a faculty member in the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute who is involved with the MEDE program.
