Faculty, administrators, university trustees, alumni, staff, students, friends, and family of Professor Ilene Busch-Vishniac gathered in Maryland Hall’s Taylor Auditorium on Saturday, October 28, for the unveiling of the former Whiting School dean’s portrait.
Painted by Baltimore artist Sam Robinson, the portrait is installed there alongside those of her predecessors—deans Whitehead, Kouwenhoven, Roy, VandeLinde, and Giddens.
Busch-Vishniac led the Whiting School from 1998 through 2003. She now teaches in the Department of Mechanical Engineering (see “Final Exam,” p. 32) and conducts research in acoustics engineering. At the event, University Provost Steven Knapp, Dean Nick Jones, and Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Andrew Douglas paid tribute to their colleague for her many contributions to the Whiting School, which included the dedication of Clark Hall, the renovation of Maryland and Krieger halls, and a 25 percent increase in undergraduate enrollment.
