Next-Gen Undergrads

Winter 2018

Dean Ed Schlesinger two years ago joined leaders of 100 U.S. engineering schools in pledging to take steps to increase opportunities for females and other underrepresented groups to pursue education and careers in engineering. These school leaders understand that diversity is more than ethical human practice; it is also good engineering practice, as diversity drives innovation. Here is a snapshot of where our undergraduate population stands as of fall 2017:

39%

Percentage of female students in this year’s first-year class.

20%

Percentage of class comprising students from under-represented minority groups.

14%

Percentage of undergraduates who identify as Hispanic.

6%

Percentage of undergraduates who identify as black or African-American.

10%

Percentage of engineering students who report that they are the first generation in their families to attend college.
