Peter Kazanzides, a research professor in the Department of Computer Science, focuses on robotics, mixed reality, and systems engineering, primarily with applications in computer-integrated surgery. He is a member of the department’s Robotics, Vision, and Graphics group.

Kazanzides co-founded Integrated Surgical Systems in 1990 to commercialize the robotic hip replacement research he performed at IBM and the University of California, Davis. As the director of robotics and software, he was responsible for the design, implementation, validation, and support of the ROBODOC Surgical System, which has been used for more than 20,000 hip and knee replacement surgeries.

He received an ScB (1983) in electrical engineering, an AB (1983) in computer science, an ScM (1985) in electrical engineering, an ScM (1987) in applied mathematics, and a PhD (1988) in electrical engineering, all at Brown University. Kazanzides joined the Whiting School of Engineering faculty in 2002.
