Michelle Zwernemann is an associate professor of the practice in the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University, where she supports the Design Team program. Michelle is an expert in product development, regulatory strategy, and quality management systems and is highly skilled at guiding students and engineers through the design process, from problem identification to ideation, prototyping, and testing. With over 15 years of experience in medical device development and commercialization, she has contributed to the design, testing, and launch of various medical devices, including orthopedic implants, upper limb prosthetic components, and systems utilizing ultrasound and bioresorbable implants. 

During her time at Synthes, Inc., Zwernemann held roles in product development, manufacturing, and innovation groups where she contributed to the development and launch of several orthopedic implants. As director of Product Development at Infinite Biomedical Technologies—an upper limb prosthetics company—she was responsible for project management and regulatory strategy, while also leading the development of EMG electrodes and an embedded platform for advanced control of multi-articulated prosthetic hands. Additionally, she has led engineering, regulatory affairs, quality, and operations at Sonavex, a JHU CBID spin-out, focusing on ultrasound solutions for measuring blood flow. 

Michelle holds a BS in biomedical engineering and an MSE in bioengineering innovation and design from the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Johns Hopkins University.
