Description of “Seeking Simplicity in a Complex World”:
A number of important engineering systems and natural phenomena are difficult to understand and control due to their high-dimensional, heterogeneous, or multi-scale dynamics. Systematically reducing the problem space, through mathematical or physical insights, can enable greater understanding leading to improved design and control of these systems. This talk will discuss ongoing efforts in the Gayme group to combine known physics with observational data to derive low-dimensional models that enable computationally tractable simulation and control-oriented analysis of these systems. Gayme will highlight efforts to leverage the insights gained from this type of approach to improve efficiency in the control of wind farms that provide power system services.
