A note about deadlines

There are no hard or fast deadlines for graduate financial aid, but we encourage you to allow a minimum of two months from the time you submit your aid application until your loan is disbursed to your account.

You can afford grad school. We can help.

Types of aid: financial assistance and support

Our students are able to find a financial fit that suits their needs through many different packages of loans, scholarships, teaching and research assistantships, and fellowships.

Loans

Federal and private loans can assist in meeting your financial needs.

If you borrowed a federal student loan at JHU for a term that began before July 1, 2026, you remain eligible to borrow under the previous federal loan limits — including Graduate PLUS loans — for the remainder of your current program or for up to three years, whichever is shorter.

To qualify, you only need to have received any Direct Loan funding (either a Direct Unsubsidized Loan or a Graduate PLUS Loan) before July 1, 2026 for your current program. You do not need to have previously borrowed a Graduate PLUS Loan specifically.

If you are unsure whether this applies to you, the financial aid office can help review your borrowing history and eligibility.

Stipends

There are a variety of fellowships, teaching assistantships, and research assistantships available to help you through your graduate work here. Find out more from your program advisor.

Scholarships

Scholarships may be available to help with the cost of your graduate education. We encourage all students to apply for private scholarships and fellowships.

Assistantships

The individual graduate programs award teaching and research assistantships, and amounts vary by program. Most departments accept candidates with a bachelor’s degree directly into their doctoral programs. Only limited assistantship support is available for terminal master’s students.

Paid Summer Internship at APL

Exceptional students pursuing a master’s degree from the Johns Hopkins Whiting School of Engineering will have the opportunity to earn a paid summer internship at the Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Laboratory in Laurel, Maryland. Working alongside APL’s renowned expert scientists and engineers, these paid internships give students a deeper understanding of the exciting work happening across engineering from artificial intelligence to applied physics to cybersecurity and so much more. To be eligible, students must be U.S. citizens and able to obtain a secret clearance.

Dean’s Master’s Fellowships

Students who have graduated with a Johns Hopkins University undergraduate degree will automatically earn a Dean’s Master’s Fellowship, covering half of the tuition for every semester of full-time, residential enrollment (fall and spring semesters only; summers and intersessions are not included; EP courses are not included) in a WSE master’s degree program, provided they have either: (a) completed eight full-time * semesters of study at Hopkins, or (b) have not been enrolled at Johns Hopkins for at least one year. Students pursuing Hopkins combined bachelor’s/master’s degrees who have not yet completed eight full-time semesters at Hopkins, and have retained undergraduate status, are eligible to continue to apply for undergraduate financial aid through the Office of Student Enrollment and Account Management (SEAM). There is typically a four semester-limit on the Dean’s Master’s Fellowship funding. Extensions may be requested (but are not guaranteed) through the Office of Graduate and Postdoctoral Academic Affairs (please email christinekavanagh@jhu.edu).

*Students who took advantage of the COVID-19 Graduating Senior Course Drop Option in the Spring 2020 semester will remain eligible for the Dean’s Master’s Fellowship (even if they changed to part-time status in their eighth semester), provided they meet all other criteria and have completed seven semesters of full-time status.

Internal Fellowships

To be eligible for Whiting School graduate fellowships, students must first apply to a graduate program. Students are automatically considered for fellowships upon application. Current students are also automatically considered for fellowships.

PLEASE NOTE: only full-time, degree-seeking graduate students in the School of Engineering are eligible for WSE graduate fellowships.

External Fellowships

External fellowships are awarded by agencies outside Johns Hopkins University.
