Suhas Eswarappa Prameela, recipient of the Johns Hopkins Diversity Leadership Council's 2020 Diversity Recognition Award

Earlier this summer, DMSE Ph.D. candidate Suhas Eswarappa Prameela was awarded the 2020 Diversity Recognition Award for his efforts in fostering inclusion within the Whiting School of Engineering. The award highlights faculty, staff, and students who are working towards the advancement and celebration of diversity and promoting inclusion across all divisions of Johns Hopkins and Suhas was the sole recipient from WSE.

Prameela was recognized with the award for his work creating inclusive spaces for students through his mentorship of LGBTQ+ students within the Department of Materials Science & Engineering and across Homewood campus, creating opportunities for students to discuss topics surrounding social justice in his diversity class. His goal is to inspire expanded perspectives that go beyond the classroom by creating a safe place and engaging dialogue about gender-diverse experiences and how to challenge the biases of others and ourselves.

Suhas is also co-chairing a subcommittee under the Homewood Council on Inclusive Excellence called the Climate, Culture, and Campus Experience (C3E) and works with the Center for Educational Resouces to develop inclusive resources/practices for Technology fellowships.

“Over the years, Hopkins has allowed me to engage and learn from many great people,” said Prameela. “More importantly, it has taught me the value of diversity and service in building a better community.”
