Research Areas Analysis of large DNA and RNA sequence data sets

Mihaela Pertea is an associate professor of biomedical engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering, an assistant professor of medicine in the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, and a member of the McKusick-Nathans Institute of Genetic Medicine.

Pertea’s research interests include analyzing microbial genomes, computational tools for transcriptome reconstruction, computational gene modeling, and genome sequencing.

In 2025, she was named an American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering Fellow. She earned a bachelor’s degrees in computer science and psychology and a master’s degree in computer science from the University of Bucharest in Romania. She also holds a master’s of science degree in engineering from Johns Hopkins University, where she later completed a PhD in computer science. She joined the Johns Hopkins faculty in 2011.
