Ashutosh Dutta is a chief 5G strategist and JHU/APL sabbatical fellow at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Labs (JHU/APL). He serves as the director of Doctor of Engineering program at JHU and an associate research professor in the Department of Computer Science.
He recently served as chair for Electrical and Computer Engineering for the Engineering for Professionals program at JHU. His career, spanning more than 30 years, includes roles as director of technology security and lead member of technical staff at AT&T, CTO of wireless operations at a cybersecurity company, NIKSUN, Inc., senior scientist at Telcordia Research, director of a central research facility at Columbia University, adjunct faculty at NJIT, and a computer engineer with TATA Motors.
Dutta is the author of more than 120 technical papers and 31 issued patents and serves as the founding co-chair for IEEE Future Networks which focuses on 5G standardization, education, publication, testbed, and roadmap activities. He served as the founding co-chair for the premier IEEE 5G World Forums and has organized 90 5G World Summits. Ashutosh currently serves as the chair for IEEE Industry Connection’s O-RAN activities and IPv6. He was IEEE Communications Society’s Distinguished Lecturer for 2017-2020 and is an ACM Distinguished Speaker (2020-2025). He is a member-at-large for the IEEE Communications Society, co-founded the IEEE STEM conference (ISEC), and helped to implement EPICS (Engineering Projects in Community Service) projects in several high schools.
He was the recipient of a 2009 IEEE MGA Leadership Award, award, 2010 IEEE-USA Professional Leadership Award, and a and 2022 IEEE-USA George F. McClure Citation of Honor. He also received a 2022 IEEE North American Region Exceptional Service Award.
Dutta is a distinguished alumnus of NIT Rourkela with a BS in electrical engineering, an MS in computer science from NJIT, and a PhD in electrical engineering from Columbia University under the supervision of Prof. Henning Schulzrinne.
He is a Fellow of IEEE, member of IEEE-HKN, and distinguished member ACM.
