Join Dean Schlesinger and the Whiting School community at the Don P. Giddens Inaugural Professorial Lecture recognizing Joanne Selinski as a teaching professor in the Department of Computer Science.
Description of “Programming a Teaching Career”:
When Selinski began graduate school very few people had personal computers or knew how to use one. Her teaching career began with the development of a “Computer Literacy” course in which she taught students how to point, click, drag and organize files. Forty years later, all students arrive at college essentially with personal computers in their pockets. Despite the tremendous growth in the field of computer science, the core concepts and challenges in teaching them have remained largely the same. So to has the joy in introducing students to the power of programming fundamentals.
Parallel to, and in part necessitated by the growth in computer science has been the establishment of the teaching faculty track at JHU and many peer institutions. The Gateway Computing program now brings together teaching faculty in every WSE department to offer a common foundation to our students. This talk will highlight the evolution of both computing education and academic teaching careers at JHU.
