Hedy Alavi, a teaching professor of Environmental Engineering in the Department of Environmental Health and Engineering, is an expert in hazardous and solid waste engineering and management. He serves as the associate dean for international programs at the Whiting School of Engineering, and as chair of the Engineering for Professionals master’s degree programs in Environmental Engineering, Environmental Engineering and Science, and Environmental Planning and Management.
Formerly, Alavi was chief of the Design and Certification Division of the Solid Waste Program in the Waste Management Administration of the Maryland Department of the Environment. He is currently a member and the chief examiner for State of Maryland and Washington, D.C. of the American Academy of Environmental Engineers and Scientists, as well as a registered Professional Engineer and a member of the American Society for Engineering Education.
He is the recipient of numerous teaching and public service awards, including the 2007 JHU Alumni Association Excellence in Teaching Award for WSE, the 2005 Education and Public Service Award from the Universities Council on Water Resources, the 1998 Excellence in Teaching Award for Johns Hopkins Engineering for Professionals at WSE, and the 1992 Merit Award from the State of Maryland, Department of the Environment, and has developed several graduate degree programs in the environmental field.
He earned his bachelor’s from Jundi Shapour University in 1972; his master’s and PhD degrees in civil engineering from the Ohio State University in 1980 and 1983, respectively; and his MBA in management from Johns Hopkins University in 2006.
