ECE Professor Ralph Etienne-Cummings has been plenty busy while on sabbatical in Seychelles.
Etienne-Cummings served as a mentor for the country’s group of students competing in the global competition, First Global Challenge 2020, which is a yearly international robotics challenge that aims to ignite a passion for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) among the more than two billion youths across the world. The team placed 44th out of 175 countries, a big jump from 2019 when Seychelles finished in 121st place.
Of the accomplishment, Etienne-Cummings is quoted by the Today in Seychelles newspaper as saying, “One of the things that I believe I can bring to the table is that I am involved in one of the top robotics programs in the world, mainly medical robotics, but at the same time there are different types of robotics too […] I have also worked on climbing machines, self-driving cars, and more. With that experience, I hope to provide additional guidance.”
