Dr. James West, research professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering and Mechanical Engineering, will be awarded the John Scott Award at a ceremony hosted by the John Scott Award Advisory Committee at the American Philosophical Society in Philadelphia, this coming November.

The John Scott Award has been awarded to men and women whose inventions have improved the “comfort, welfare, and happiness of human-kind” since 1816. Starting in 1919, the Board of Directors of City Trusts of Philadelphia have provided the award through the recommendations of the advisory committee.

This year, Dr. West will receive the John Scott Award for his inventions relating to the foil electret microphone, alongside Bjarne Stroustrup, Ph.D. for the design and implementation of C++ programming language.
