Pablo Iglesias, the Edward J. Schaefer Professor, has been named head of the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. Iglesias has served as interim head since 2023 and holds joint appointments in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Cell Biology, and Biomedical Engineering.

Under his interim leadership, the department welcomed 11 new faculty members and experienced a major growth in enrollment, including a 90% increase in first-year undergraduate students in 2024 and a 140% rise in residential MSE applications in 2025.

Iglesias’ research focuses on how cells interpret directional cues, regulate division, and maintain lipid balance. His computational models shed light on mitotic spindle formation, cytokinesis, and cell motion, with applications ranging from immune cell engineering to understanding cancer metastasis.
