Four Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) faculty members are among the 148 Johns Hopkins affiliates to earn 2024 Discovery Awards. This year, the university selected 44 projects across 11 units for awards, focusing on challenges in health care, artificial intelligence, and climate change.
Mahyar Fazlyab, assistant professor; Yuri Dvorkin, associate professor; Enrique Mallada, associate professor; and Vishal Patel, associate professor, will team up with colleagues in other divisions on the projects below. Fazlyab, Mallada, and Patel also are instructors in the Whiting School of Engineering’s Engineering for Professionals program in electrical and computer engineering.
- Data Valuation in Distributed and Private Large-Scale Radiology: This project involves Mahyar Fazlyab along with Jeremias Sulam (Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, Applied Mathematics and Statistics), Harrison Bai (School of Medicine), and Nicolas Loizou (Applied Mathematics and Statistics, Mathematical Institute for Data Science, Computer Science).
- Infrastructure Climate Adaptation/Resiliency in the US (ICARUS): Led by Marisel Villafane-Delgado (Applied Physics Laboratory) and including Yuri Dvorkin, Dennice Gayme (Mechanical Engineering), Enrique Mallada, and several others from the Applied Physics Lab, this project is co-funded with the Ralph O’Connor Sustainable Energy Institute.
- Virtual Neurology Clinic: A Human-AI Interface for Remote Autonomous Augmented/Virtual Reality Neurologic Screening and Triaging: This project involves Vishal Patel, Kemar Green (School of Medicine), John Probasco (School of Medicine), Ayah Zirkly (Center for Language and Speech Processing), Ziang Xiao (Computer Science), Peter Kazanzides (Computer Science), and Youseph Yazdi (Biomedical Engineering), and is co-funded with the Institute for Assured Autonomy.
Launched in 2015, Johns Hopkins Discovery Awards aim to encourage faculty from various disciplines to work together, fostering a collaborative environment to tackle multifaceted issues and expand the horizons of knowledge.
