Dr. Brian Grubel (PhD, 2017), Products Manager/Associate Technical Fellow for Advanced Technology Programs at the Boeing Company, Herndon, VA, has been appointed Fellow-by-Courtesy in the ECE Department, effective April 1, 2018. Dr. Grubel’s dissertation research, “Silicon Photonic Physical Unclonable Functions,” led to the first photonic physical encryption key that is unclonable, robust, fast, and unpredictable in behavior. Known as PPUFs, these devices offer unparalleled secure authentication to protect access to critical resources. Dr. Grubel shares a patent on the PPUF with Profs Amy Foster, Mark Foster, and Brint Cooper, with whom he will continue collaborations in the pursuit of opportunities to exploit this new technology.
