Starting January 1, 2025, Muyinatu “Bisi” Bell, a John C. Malone Associate Professor of electrical and computer engineering at the Whiting School of Engineering at Johns Hopkins University will become editor-in-chief of the Journal of Biomedical Optics (JBO). Published by SPIE, JBO is a leading journal in biophotonics, dedicated to advancing optical systems and techniques that improve healthcare and biomedical research.
Bell is the founder and director of the Photoacoustic and Ultrasonic Systems Engineering (PULSE) Lab. She will succeed Brian W. Pogue, who has served as JBO’s editor-in-chief since 2018.
“I’m deeply honored to lead JBO into its next chapter,” says Bell. “I published one of my first biomedical optics papers in JBO, and have been embraced by the community ever since. I look forward to supporting this community and welcoming new contributors as we continue to drive innovation in the field.”
A recognized leader in ultrasound and photoacoustic imaging, Bell holds multiple appointments across Johns Hopkins, including in the departments of Biomedical Engineering, Computer Science, and Oncology. Her research has led to significant advancements in medical imaging and technology.
Inducted as an SPIE Fellow in 2023, Bell has been an active member of the SPIE community since 2014, receiving multiple awards for her contributions, including the prestigious Alan T. Waterman Award from the National Science Foundation in 2023.
