Yanrong Xiao, Engr ’24 (PhD), who graduated from the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering in the fall, was recently elected as the Chair of the U.S. Association for Computational Mechanics (USACM) Student Chapter.

USACM is the leading organization in the United States dedicated to promoting and advancing the field of computational mechanics, representing U.S. interests as part of the International Association for Computational Mechanics (IACM).

Prior to being elected as the student chapter chair, Xiao completed her doctoral studies under Somnath Ghosh, focusing on computational structure-material analysis and design of composites across multiple length scales incorporating uncertainty quantification.

In her new role, Xiao will work with USACM student committee members to promote engagement and professional development within the computational mechanics community. Her responsibilities include fostering relationships with academia, industry, and other sectors, organizing student-specific events, and supporting the development of young researchers in the field.

The USACM Student Chapter provides a nationwide platform for students to engage in activities aimed at advancing computational mechanics, offering opportunities for networking, collaboration, and professional growth.
