Professor Tim Rupert

Tim Rupert Engr ’07, ’07 (MSE), professor of materials science and engineering and director of the Hopkins Extreme Materials Institute (HEMI), has been named a 2025 Brimacombe Medalist by The Metals, Minerals, and Materials Society (TMS).

The mid-career award recognizes TMS members who have achieved sustained excellence and achievement in business, technology, education, public policy, or science related to materials science and engineering and with a record of continuing service to the profession.

Rupert was recognized for contributions to the science of nanocrystalline metals and interfacial science, specifically exploring defects in the grain boundaries of materials.

“My main research is on these defects in materials like grain boundaries or dislocations. I investigate their structure and how to modulate them, and then see what effect they have on properties,” he says.

He also recently earned an APRPA-E grant to explore approaches to strengthen tungsten for nuclear fusion applications.

“I am so very honored to be selected as a Brimacombe Medalist,” says Rupert. “TMS has been my home society for many years, and it is incredibly meaningful to be recognized here. I see it as a call to action to continue contributing to this community that has helped me so much.”
