On February 24, 2017, the first Mid-Atlantic Biomaterials Day will take place at the City College of New York. Hosted in conjunction with Rutgers University, University of Rochester, Columbia University, and the City College of New York, the Johns Hopkins chapter of the Society for Biomaterials hopes to use the event to foster collaboration and networking amongst the student attendees. With a theme of Biomaterial Frontiers: Emerging Challenges Creating New Opportunities, the organizers want the attendees to be aware of the many career possibilities the world of biomaterials offers to graduating students.
In addition to focusing on the various career opportunities available to students who study biomaterials science, this event is set to include plenary speakers on different biomaterial topics, a career panel of industry executives, and a keynote by Dr. Liisa Kuhn, of the University of Connecticut Health Center.
A portion of the event will be dedicated to student oral and poster presentations. In preparation for the event, the Johns Hopkins chapter of the Society for Biomaterials is seeking abstracts, with a submission deadline of January 27th. The best presentations will be awarded at the event. Group advisor Hai-Quan Mao is thrilled to see the hard work of the students come to fruition. Not only have they successfully been able to secure industry professionals for the keynote and plenary speakers, the group has also landed Profusa as an event sponsor.
James Shamul, Vice President of the Johns Hopkins Society for Biomaterials Chapter, said this of the conference, “This event will afford many students, who are just as passionate as we are about biomaterials, the opportunity to obtain advice and insight for building a biomaterials-related career. We want to show to a wide range of students at different stages in their education, that there is immense potential for biomaterials to make actual contributions to medicine in our lifetimes by having them hear from leaders in biomaterials industry and research. We are hoping to grow the interest of the attendees so that they can begin to become the future leading biomaterials researchers and innovators.”
