Howard Katz, a pioneer in the fields of organic electronics and photonics, established the structural, physical, and synthetic organic chemical principles for several material classes as they first emerged, from their inception as scientific discoveries through their widespread investigation and application.

He was the first to report the value and methodology of organic semiconductor (OSC) syntheses that avoided impurities responsible for morphological and electronic heterogeneity, summarized in Accounts of Chemical Research in 2001 (800 cites).  He introduced several rigid and strongly assembling electron donor subunits, such as benzodithiophene and anthradithiophene, that are now linchpins of conducting polymers and printable OSCs.  The climax of his OSC design is the demonstration that partially fluorinated side chains on tetracarboxylic diimides allowed n-channel OFETs to operate in air (Nature and Journal of the American Chemical Society, 2000, 1140 cites).

Katz also was the first to promote the idea that the combination of material properties and device architecture of OFETs was highly suited to chemical detection. He is credited with the very first published paper describing this application. He was the first to distinguish doping, quenching, and dipolar trapping mechanisms for OFET responses to analytes (reviewed in Advanced Materials, 2010), especially important for emerging sensor array and “electronic nose” technologies that rely on a diversity of responses to analytes by different OSCs.  He was on the Bell Labs-E-Ink design team that produced the first OSC-driven electronic reader prototype.

Katz made a key contribution to OFET dielectrics with his development of a solid ionic gate aluminum oxide that could be deposited from solution (Nature Materials, 2009, >170 cites). He further showed that the high dielectric constant arose from ionic polarization that counterintuitively was greater for the larger included ion (K+) than the smaller one (Li+). Katz was the first to show that the gate dielectric could be used actively to tune the threshold (turnon) voltage of OFETs (Journal of Applied Physics, 2002, >170 cites). He used electret (charge separation, dipolar polarization) behavior of nonpolar polymer gate dielectrics to preset the threshold voltage of OFETs used in oscillator circuits and sensors.

In the area of organic electro-optic materials, Katz was the first to optimize the dipole orientation contribution, dipole moment change on excitation, and chromophore number density that synergistically lead to the electro-optic effect in such polymers. This work was an inspiration for translational technology developments such as commercialized high-speed electro-optic modulators like those of Lumera (based on further extensions of his organic chromophore design principles) and the oriented, layer-by-layer gate dielectrics of Northwestern University known as SANDs (self-assembled nanolayer dielectrics).

Katz has at least two other fundamental contributions to polymer materials to his credit.   He optimized the tradeoff between refractive index contrast and molecular diffusivity in polymers to create a multiplexed holographic information writing system spun out as Inphase Technologies (Optics Letters 1999, >140 cites).  He was also the first to propose that the fine-tuning of Fermi and transport energy level occupancies in thermoelectric polymers could lead to increased Seebeck coefficients and power factors (Macromolecules, 2010, ~90 cites).
