Kamal Choudhary, assistant professor of materials science and engineering with a joint appointment in electrical and computer engineering, was elected as a fellow of the American Physical Society (APS) in the Topical Group of Data Science. He was selected “for foundational contributions to data-driven materials discovery, including the creation of JARVIS infrastructure and machine learning tools integrating classical, quantum, and AI methods to accelerate computational and experimental materials research.”

Choudhary’s research seeks to expand the intersection of electrical and computer engineering and materials science by fusing artificial intelligence with the physical sciences. His lab group focuses on atomistic materials design using quantum mechanics, classical simulations, and machine learning.

He is currently developing an AI infrastructure for materials science called Atom.GPT, a tool that can accelerate the discovery of materials, providing accurate answers to complex questions in the field in a matter of seconds.
