Undergraduate Studies

Civil engineering, more than any other engineering discipline, is tied to society and our day-to-day lives. It plays a critical role in our safety and security and includes everything from the design and construction of buildings, bridges, and roads to securing our water resources and fragile coastlines and understanding the relationship of people and nature with the constructed environment.

Many of today’s most pressing social, economical, and environmental problems are being addressed-and solved-by civil engineers, including students and faculty at Johns Hopkins.

Lori Graham-Brady Professor and Department Chair

Welcome! We’re so happy that you’ve taken the time to browse our website. While we hope to provide you with a lot of information such as the programs we offer and the research areas in which we specialize, I’d like to give you a bit of an inside look as to what differentiates us from other programs.

Our department gives its students an undergraduate education that is unique in its depth, and it provides them access to faculty and an extraordinary range of educational opportunities beginning in their freshman year. Our small size means that our students enjoy the benefits of being members of a close-knit and supportive community while also enjoying the advantages that come from being part of one of the nation’s leading research institutions.

Our curriculum provides a firm grounding in the principles and practice of civil engineering while emphasizing creative problem-solving skills, teamwork, and independent inquiry. Building on this foundation our students pursue a wide array of research and professional experiences that provide exposure to more highly specialized subject matter.

Finally, we place great emphasis on civil engineering’s societal implications and future, including the tremendous potential our field holds to solve problems of global importance. Our alumni have successful careers in a variety of fields, including academia, civil engineering practice, law, medicine and finance. Our goal is to give our students the tools they need to succeed in whatever field they select after their undergraduate degree.

These are only a few reasons why we love our department, and we hope you will too. Please don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions or concerns you may have as you continue to explore our program and all that it has to offer.

Program Mission

Inspire the leaders of tomorrow to take on the challenge of creating and sustaining the built environment that underpins our society. Enable these leaders with fundamental engineering knowledge, a broad set of skills, and an inquisitive attitude. In partnership with the many disciplines that makeup the civil engineering field, and in the face of uncertain information, as well as ever-changing needs, risks, and constraints – create engineers that successfully adapt and innovate solutions for the built environment
