Matthew McCartyCongratulations to alumnus Matthew McCarty, B.S. ’08, M.C.E. ‘09 on being recognized by the Americans Society of Civil Engineers as one of the New Faces of Civil Engineering – Professional.

McCarty realized his calling as a civil engineer during Professor Ben Schafer’s Perspectives on the Evolution of Structures course. Seeing the grandess of civil engineering through a historical perspective led him to complete Hopkin’s five-year combined Bachelor’s/Master’s program.

He began working at Whitman, Requardt & Associates, LLP in 2008 as he was finishing his Master’s degree. “It gave me a unique chance to see both the practicing and theoretical worlds of civil engineering,” he states. “It was nice to use my knowledge and see direct applications in the workforce.” He still works at the firm today.

He served as president of the Structural Engineering Institute (SEI)’s Maryland chapter from October 2013 – October 2015. In his two-year term, McCarty has achieved his goal of increasing the number on construction site visits. These visits bring different people together to openly discuss a project. “It’s one thing to design a project, but to a completely different thing to see how the project is built,” he says. “The site visits allow us to converse without officially representing a company. We’re just a group of people brainstorming about ways to improve current procedures.”

The New Faces of Civil Engineering recognition programs highlight the next generation of civil engineering leaders. By showcasing young, diverse, talented engineers, the program illustrates that engineering is an exciting profession open to all. Ten honorees from around the world are selected by ASCE in each of two divisions: collegiate and professional. The honorees were recognized this week to honor Engineers Week, and also will be recognized at ASCE’s annual Outstanding Projects And Leaders (OPAL) Gala, March 17, in Arlington, VA.
