One of the best ways to learn more about careers in civil and systems engineering is through an internship. Internships are job shadowing opportunities in which you can observe someone who is in your field of choice. It is also an opportunity for you to ask questions about career paths and to seek advice which you can use to assist in your own career planning. Internships can assist you with increasing your networking contacts and can create leads for potential internships or full-time jobs in the future.

Our program connects a select number of qualified, interested MSE/MS students with alumni and their colleagues at their workplaces. Each host decides how to compose the visit, which might include shadowing the host, meeting with the host’s colleagues, attending meetings, having a tour, and/or working on a project. Internship sites include different types of companies. This program typically takes place during the January intersession.

Possible internship activities include:

  • Shadowing one or more professionals for a full day
  • Conducting informational interviews with professionals in a range of departments and levels
  • Participating in daily operations that provide hands-on exposure to the career field/industry
  • Completing a relevant project if the internship is long enough to accommodate it
  • Attending meetings and presentations
  • Touring the work site

Students will be responsible for any travel or housing arrangements, meals, and any related expenses. Please contact your advisor with questions regarding internships.
