Somnath Ghosh, Michael G. Callas Chair Professor in the Department of Civil and Systems Engineering (CaSE), has been honored with the 2024 J.N. Reddy Medal for Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures. Ghosh is recognized for his exceptional scholarly contributions to the field of multiscale-multiphysics computational mechanics and materials, and for his significant industrial impact and strong interdisciplinary leadership.

Ghosh, who directs the Computational Mechanics Research Laboratory (CMRL) and founded the Center for Integrated Structure-Materials Modeling and Simulations (CISMMS), has made significant advances in the field. His work in spatio-temporal multiscale and multiphysics modeling has been particularly impactful, with applications in the prognosis and life prediction of metals and composites, as well as in multifunctional materials such as piezo-electric damage sensing and load-bearing antennas. He is the co-Director of NASA’s Space Technology Research Institute for Model-based Qualification and Certification of Additive Manufacturing (IMQCAM), leading the team for developing a Digital Twin for Additive Manufacturing.

Ghosh’s computational models and tools are widely utilized in the aerospace, automotive, materials, and propulsion industries by companies like Pratt & Whitney, General Electric, and Rolls-Royce, as well as in U.S. Department of Defense laboratories, including the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory, the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Army Research Laboratory, and multiple NASA agencies.

Established in 2018 by the Mechanics of Advanced Materials and Structures, the award is named in honor of J.N. Reddy, a renowned authority in applied and computational mechanics and the founding Editor-in-Chief of the journal.

As the award recipient, Ghosh will deliver the plenary lecture at the 4th International Conference on Mechanics of Materials and Structures (ICMAMS), organized and hosted by the Ramaiah Institute of Technology in Bangalore from December 11-13, 2024.
