Professor Tony Dalrymple recently spoke to The Washington Post regarding the construction of islands on top of coral reefs and the effects it may have on both the islands and the reefs themselves.

“You can build an island if you do it right,” said Dalrymple. “But it is not clear these islands will be permanent unless they can deal with erosion. They will wash away, just like putting sand on East Coast beaches.”
