The Math Acceleration Tutoring with Hopkins (MATH) Program is a high dosage, high quality, in-school math tutoring program in which Johns Hopkins University undergraduate and graduate students provide small group tutoring in mathematics to students in grades 4 to 8. Currently, the program serves more than 150 students in East Baltimore’s Henderson-Hopkins Elementary Middle School and will be expanding to other local schools soon.
We believe that targeted exposure and near-peer relationships with undergraduate and graduate tutors will strengthen students’ enjoyment, confidence, and self-efficacy in math. Currently, we are evaluating the program’s effectiveness.
About the Program
- Participating students will demonstrate dramatic academic growth on a standardized growth measure. The designated measures will be i-ready, unit tests, and/or MCAP.
- Students will self-report higher levels of positive attitudes towards math (enjoyment, confidence, and/or self-efficacy in math).
- Participating JHU tutors will find the experience of working with students in the community to be meaningful and impactful in both the short- and long-term.
The MATH Program is a high dosage (+25 hours/year), high quality tutoring program designed to support students who are performing two or more grade levels behind in mathematics.
Identified students are grouped in pairs and are partnered with tutors they see four days a week, for a minimum of 40 minutes, during the school day.
In SY2022-2023 and SY2023-2024, MATH was evaluated by Yolanda Abel (principal investigator), Frank Williams (statistician), and a Johns Hopkins School of Education graduate student. These external evaluators are measuring impact and progress on standardized growth measures and students’ adjustments in attitudes toward math. Final reports will be published soon.
