Campus Outings and Family Engineering Experiences (COFEE) builds on the 10-year Barclay Hopkins STEM Partnership between the Whiting School of Engineering and Barclay Elementary/Middle School. Curricular-aligned campus outings for grades 3 – 8, and our Family Engineering Day.

The goal of COFEE is to engage students and their families in engineering experiences that will inspire and prepare the students to pursue exciting STEM college majors and meaningful, high-paying STEM careers.

COFEE consists of two parts, school-day campus outings for students in 3rd – 8th grades and Family Engineering Day. See below for more details about each part.

Campus Outings are curricular-aligned STEM challenges and enrichment activities designed for Baltimore City Public School students in grade 3-8. We engage JHU faculty, staff and students to lead two hands-on STEM activities on the JHU campus. Each campus outing serves approximately 50 students. We provide transportation to and from the campus, all activity materials, and lunch to students and accompanying teachers and chaperones at no cost. For the 2025-26 school year, the schedule of visits is below.

Grade Month Curricular Alignment
4 October SABES Unit 2 (Music to My Ears)
3 November Math Games and Puzzles
7 December IQWST Unit 2 (Physical Science)
5 March SABES Unit 3 (Save the Bay)
8 April IQWST Unit 4 (Intro to Chemistry)
6 May/June IQWST Unit 4 (Earth and Space Science)

  • Twice a year – once in the fall (November) and once in the spring (March) – we offer 6-8 families with students in grades 3-5 a FREE family engineering day. These are full-day Saturday events, featuring an engineering challenge led by JHU students.  There is a rotating set of three activities that are offered so that families can participate multiple years.  Some of these activities include guided tours of campus labs.
  • Transportation can be provided if needed or families can arrange their own transportation.
