LightShield: Electrochromatic Windshield

Project Description:

LightShield introduces an electrochromatic approach to windshield tinting, making use of a liquid crystal layer to transition between tinted and untinted states. The alignment of the liquid crystals controls the light transmission through the layer, and can be modulated through an electric field. Our team proposes this solution for windshield glare reduction, improving upon previous methods in metrics of transition speed and ease of use.

Project Photo:

A windshield split in half showing the clear state and the dark tint state, with bus bars indicated where voltage will be applied.

The schematic shows the transition states of LightShield as well as the bus bars and applied voltage that will generate an electric field for liquid crystal alignment.
