BioBand: An Early-Warning Monitoring System for Infected Wounds

Project Description:

BioBand is a low-cost smart wound dressing designed to provide continuous postoperative wound monitoring without requiring bandage removal. The bandage uses a pH-responsive hydrogel layer that changes color when wound conditions shift toward elevated pH levels commonly associated with infection risk. This allows patients and healthcare providers to visually identify potential complications earlier, enabling faster intervention and reducing delays in care. BioBand combines affordability, ease of use, and scalable manufacturing to make advanced wound monitoring accessible across hospitals and outpatient settings. Unlike electronic smart bandages, BioBand requires no batteries, sensors, or external devices, lowering cost and simplifying adoption. Initial target markets include high-risk surgical procedures such as orthopedic, abdominal, cardiac, and cesarean-section recoveries. By improving early detection of surgical site infections, BioBand aims to reduce readmissions, lower treatment costs, and improve patient outcomes.

Our team collaborated on technical design, material selection, market research, cost modeling, and commercialization strategy. By combining engineering and business perspectives, we developed BioBand into a practical healthcare innovation with strong market potential.
