Winning projects will be featured as part of Engineering Now, a video series produced by the Center for Media & Technology Solutions (CMTS) and published on the WSE YouTube channel. These videos highlight the key engineering features of selected projects for a general audience, and confidential or IP-sensitive details do not need to be disclosed in the application or final video.

Purpose of the Award

Many Design Day projects deserve an audience beyond the event itself. The Media Spotlight Award helps extend the life and visibility of selected projects by turning them into short, accessible videos that show how the project works, why it matters, and how it can be understood by a wider audience.

Selected projects also receive a $1,000 award that may be used at the recipients’ discretion.

This award highlights projects that are:

  • Solving a real-world problem
  • Easy to explain in a visual, engaging way
  • Well-suited for a how-to or demonstration-based video format
  • Likely to resonate with audiences beyond Johns Hopkins

Eligibility

To be considered for the Media Spotlight Award, project teams must:

  • Be participating in JHU Engineering Design Day
  • Be willing to work with CMTS after Design Day to develop a short video about the project
  • Be comfortable having the project featured publicly through WSE channels

Submitting an application does not guarantee selection.

What Winners Agree to Do

Selected teams collaborate with CMTS after Design Day to create a short video. Planning and review can be coordinated remotely when needed, while filming arrangements will depend on the project and team availability. This typically includes:

  • A planning conversation with CMTS
  • Developing a key content outline for video scripting
  • Participation in filming
  • Helping explain the project for a general audience
  • Reviewing the final video for accuracy
  • Allowing the video to be published on WSE channels

What CMTS Provides

CMTS works with you on the video production process, including:

  • Project planning and story development
  • Filming and editing
  • Graphics, captions, and packaging
  • Publishing support for the Engineering Now series

Selection Criteria

Projects will be reviewed and selected by a committee of WSE experts based on factors such as:

  • Real-world impact
  • Clarity and public appeal
  • Strong visual demonstration potential
  • Ability to translate the project into an accessible how-to or explainer format
  • Feasibility for video production after Design Day

About Engineering Now

Engineering Now is a WSE video series that showcases practical engineering ideas, solutions, and demonstrations in a public-facing format. The series highlights work that is innovative, useful, and understandable to audiences beyond the classroom or lab.
