Yanxun Xu
Associate Professor of Applied Mathematics and Statistics
Whiting School of Engineering

Yanxun Xu joined Johns Hopkins University as an assistant professor in 2015. Yanxun is known for developing Bayesian statistical theory and methodology for a broad range of problems, such as high-dimensional data analysis, reinforcement learning, nonparametric statistics, and uncertainty quantification. She also develops new statistical and machine learning methods for various applications, including electronic health records, dynamic treatment regimens, cancer genomics, early detection of Alzheimer’s disease, mental health in people with HIV, clinical trial designs, and material engineering. Yanxun has published more than 80 articles in academic journals. She is the recipient of a 2016 Mitchell Prize from the International Society for Bayesian Analysis (ISBA), JHU’s Center for AIDS Research Faculty Development Award, and the Johns Hopkins inHealth Discovery Program Award.The Joseph and Suzanne Jenniches Faculty Scholar Award was established in 2022 through the generosity of Joseph ’86 and Suzanne ’79 Jenniches. Both Joseph and Suzanne graduated from the Whiting School with a Master of Science degree. They remain active volunteers in our alumni community, and Suzanne currently serves as a member of the Whiting School Advisory Board. The Joseph and Suzanne Jenniches Faculty Scholar Award serves the Whiting School’s mission in a powerful and visible way, recognizing outstanding junior faculty for their scholarship, research, and entrepreneurial thinking.
