Crab-Back: Low-Cost Acoustic Release Backup Buoy for Crab Pot Recovery
- Program: Electrical and Computer Engineering
- Course: EN.520.498 ECE Senior Design
- Year: 2026
Project Description:
The Crab-Back is a low-cost, acoustic release backup buoy for crab pot recovery. Boat traffic and storms in the Chesapeake Bay regularly sever the lines connecting crab pots to their buoy markers. This makes these crab pots nearly impossible to recover amidst the Bay’s murky waters, but the Crab-Back solves this problem by making crab pots easy to visually locate.
The device is split into two components – a buoy module and a remote. The buoy module attaches to the crab pot itself and releases a small backup buoy on command via an encrypted acoustic signal sent from the remote.
