Lakeland Park Trail Design: Rooted Steps
- Program: Civil and Systems Engineering
- Course: EN.560.192 CaSE Cornerstone Design Project
- Year: 2026
Project Description:
In South Baltimore, the city-owned Lakeland Park includes a wooded area with trails. A portion of the trail has steep terrain that requires steps to make the trail system more accessible. This project proposes a plan for Lakeland that reflects the needs and input of the community and project partners. The proposed staircase design improves access along the slope while maintaining the environment’s organic character. The design uses reclaimed timber from Camp Small to create steps that blend with the park setting, with dimensions based on partner input. The plan also addresses drainage by placing logs to divert water toward drainage swales, helping reduce erosion and washouts. Additionally, the design accounts for limited equipment access by using materials and construction methods that can be transported and installed by hand.
