Green Reader: A Putting Aid for Visually Impaired Golfers

Project Description:

Visually impaired golfers have difficulty understanding the terrain of the green when putting. This information is nuanced yet critical to a successful putt. Our solution has two parts. First, using the gyrometer and accelerometer sensors built into our phones we can place the phone on the green and determine the terrain of the putt (uphill, downhill, breaking left or right). Second, we place a QR-code like tag on the pin so a camera can recognize it and align the golfer to the hole. Distance to the pin is also determined by computer vision algorithms. With both of these functionalities, visually impaired golfers can better understand where the hole is and how to plan their shot given the terrain.
