Project Description:
The global food system faces a dual challenge: persistent food insecurity and significant environmental harm. Any meaningful redesign must balance nutritional adequacy, sustainability, affordability, and economic viability. Our team will develop and analyze a multi-objective optimization model to evaluate these tradeoffs and identify pathways toward a more equitable and resilient food system. To ground the analysis, we will apply the food system model to the United States and Argentina. The United States reflects a high-income country marked by overproduction, food waste, and unequal access, while Argentina represents an agricultural economy where export priorities, domestic food access, and sustainability concerns are closely intertwined. These two cases allow us to compare how food-system priorities and constraints differ across national contexts.
