Rainwater Collection System to Promote Water Conservation

Project Description:

Access to water is a significant challenge for many school gardens, especially those situated far from water sources. Implementing a rainwater collection system offers a sustainable solution, promoting water conservation and a hands on learning experience. Our team designed a storage solution in the form of a bench with expandable slide flaps to increase the surface area of the collected rain. Students can see the inner workings of the bench and participate in pumping water to the garden with a hand-operated rotary pump.

Project Photo:

A wooden bench with a light wood slatted top and a white PVC crank pump emerging from one end, placed on a grassy lawn in front of a brick academic building.

This rainwater-collecting bench doubles as a garden seat and educational tool. Liftable side panels increase rain capture, and a hand crank pumps filtered water from the storage tank. Designed for gardens, it engages users in sustainable practices through hands-on interaction with rainwater collection and filtration.
