Trackea: 3D Pediatric Trachea Reconstruction Technology

Project Description:

Laryngotracheal stenosis (LTS) is a narrowing of the airway due to the growth of inflamed tissue in the trachea. LTS presents differently in every patient: the shape and severity of the condition are dependent on a variety of factors. Clinical intervention typically requires an initial assessment of the airway and multiple rounds of surgical treatment. Currently, it is difficult for clinicians to visualize the entire geometry of the airway and quantitatively determine the severity of a patient’s stenosis, which are necessary to determine the most effective management strategy. Our solution incorporates a small sensing device onto an endoscope to quantitatively measure the cross-sectional area along the entire trachea during a normal airway evaluation. It is able to provide clinicians with a full 3D reconstruction of the trachea, leading to more informed clinical decision-making.
