Engineering a Self-Expandable Endovascular Embolization Device

Project Description:

Embolizations are a minimally-invasive surgical procedure used to treat a variety of conditions including arteriovenous malformations, hemorrhages, and aneurysms. The current gold standard device for performing embolizations is a platinum coil, which are very expensive and can lead to a variety of complications. For this project, we created a macroporous alginate-nanofiber composite cryogel device that surpasses platinum coils in the areas of cost, versatility, and ease of use, while at the same time matching the fast-acting and permanent nature of coils.
