Students working out at the O’Connor Recreation Center can now opt for super-healthy, protein-based fruit smoothies as an alternative to soda and chips, thanks to Hop and Shake, a new student-run business.

Among the most popular smoothie options: the “prezzy d,” a strawberry-banana smoothie in honor of Johns Hopkins President Ronald J. Daniels (it was his favorite flavor), and the “Bloomberg,” which is made with blueberries, strawberries, and raspberries.

A joint effort between students from Engineering and Arts and Sciences, Hop and Shake is the latest venture under Hopkins Student Enterprises, a suite of student-run startups including the Blue Jay Cleaners, the Complete Dorm Room, and Hopkins Student Movers.

Freshman computer science student Noah Presler is using his computer skills to oversee core business functions, such as the Web presence and a point-of-purchase system. “Everyone uses their strengths,” he says. “The project managers analyze the needs, and the engineers design the solutions… It’s a lot like the real world.”
